Governor B L Joshi and top officials of Gautam Buddha Technical University found themselves in an awkward situation during Wednesday’s convocation ceremony when a student refused to accept his architecture degree, saying it was “useless” as it is not recognised by the Council of Architecture. Former Chief Justice of India was chief guest at the event.

Yogendra Pal Singh, who had stood second in B Arch, was called on the stage for receiving the degree and silver medal from the Governor, who is also the Chancellor of the university. While Yogesh accepted the medal he did not take the degree, saying it was “useless”. Emulating him, gold medalist Asifa Siddiqui also returned her degree.

Soon, other architecture students joined the protest, leading to chaos at the venue and the police were called in to promptly remove them. Intervening into the matter,Governor Joshi invited a delegation of the students to his office where he reportedly assured to look into the matter. “I told the Governor that the Council of Architecture (CoA) had in 2007 de-recognised the College of Architecture and its degrees. The CoA is not registering students of this college and hence we cannot practice,” Yogesh said.

He also said that he tried to give a memorandum to the Governor,“but university vice-chancellor Prof Kripa Shanker took the papers from me.” Students said they had given memorandums to V-C Kripa Shanker and college principal Mukul Singh, but they took no action.
