SP MP Virendra Bhatia dies at 63

Former advocate general and Samajwadi Party Rajya Sabha MP Virendra Bhatia died in a hospital in Delhi today.

Former advocate general and Samajwadi Party Rajya Sabha MP Virendra Bhatia died in a hospital in Delhi today. Bhatia,63,was suffering from various ailments. He is survived by his wife and two children.

SP spokesman Mohan Singh said Bhatia’s body would be flown to Lucknow for his last rites on Tuesday. Born on April 22,1947 at Sialkot,now in Pakistan,Bhatia was Advocate General of the UP during the tenure the Mulayam Singh Yadav regime (2003-07). He became member of Rajya Sabha on April 3,2006 on a SP ticket.

SP chief Mulayam Singh Yadav said Bhatia was a devoted leader of the party. Despite his illness,he remained at the district police lines in Lucknow with the party leaders who were detained on April 27 in connection with the agitation against the inflation organised by 13 political parties,Yadav said.

At the Lucknow Bench of the Allahabad HC,a full court reference was organised to pay tribute to the former Advocate General. Several judges,along with members of the Bar,expressed grief over Bhatia’s death. A condolence meeting was also held by the Oudh Bar Association. The Lucknow Bar Association also mourned the death of the former advocate general. Governor BL Joshi,Chief Minister Mayawati,state Congress president Rita Bahuguna Joshi and BJP MP Lalji Tandon too mourned Bhatia’s death.
