To strengthen security along the porous Indo-Nepal border ahead of the first phase of Lok Sabha polls,the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) has installed close-circuit TV cameras and deployed dog squads to check infiltration and smuggling.
The cameras have been installed at SSB posts and the main roads,according to senior SSB officer Lalit Kumar. Six dog squads trained in detecting narcotics and arms have also been deployed to check smuggling.
The polling is scheduled for April 16,23 and 30 in Gorakhpur,Basti and Devipatan divisions of eastern Uttar Pradesh,which include about a dozen parliamentary constituencies touching Nepal border.
Spread across more than 200 km,the pours border also touches Rapti and Ghaghra rivers. Apart from the border,the main entry points between India and Nepal are Sonauli in Gorakhpur and Rupaidiha in Bahraich,where the SSB has created 18 new border outposts.
According to the SSB,a para-military force which mainly mans the Indo-Nepal border,security has been beefed up and precautionary steps are being taken to ensure peaceful elections.
