After two years of preparation, the Lucknow University (LU) will finally get the facility of an Educational Satellite Network (EDUSAT) on its the main campus.

With the availability of this service, the students of the university will now be able to share information as well attend lectures being delivered by an expert in another university. For this purpose, the university established a Satellite Interactive Terminal (SIT) this month on the campus with the help of the Indian Space Research Organisation.

The authorities said the SIT has been connected with the EDUSAT and it will be operational within a week. EDUSAT state coordinator Professor Nishi Pandey confirmed about the development, but refused to divulge any information.

The state government had provided Rs 10 lakh to the university for setting up the SIT. It has been installed at the UGC’s Academic Staff College, where a virtual classroom has been set up with scores of computers and a big screen.

Using the SITs at the Academic Staff College,LU students will also be able to watch the educational programmes telecast by educational channels including Vyas,Eklavya,Doordarshan Bharti, and Gyan Darshan.

The virtual classroom will also be used for tele-conferencing with California State University,Long Beach,(CSULB),US and University of Korea.

Two years ago, these universities had signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with LU for sharing lectures and an access to their online libraries.

“Besides LU,11 other universities and 22 degree colleges in the state have been selected for the EDUSAT facility. SIT has been installed in a few of these institutions while in the others it will be set up soon.” said an LU official.

To get accustomed to the functioning of the SIT,a workshop will be organised this month,in which two persons from each institution, including one technical person and one academician will be invited, added the official.

“When these institutions are equipped with the SITs,they will be able to share the lectures. For example,if a professor at LU is delivering a lecture on Economics, students of other universities and colleges with SITs will be able to watch it and ask queries,” said the official.
