If not movies then dance. Something is sustaining the footfall in the lobby of Inox multiplex. Actually, footwork would be the term more appropriate.
“We are running a 15-day workshop teaching Salsa and the lobby turns into a dancefloor till the first show patrons begin to step in,” says Anuradha, marketing manager of the cineplex. “About 30 boys and girls have enrolled and they are mostly those who have found a fun-filled pastime for summer holidays,” she says, admitting that there the wasn’t the kind of crowd cinemas witness during this time of the year because of the producer-multiplex tussle, but Inox is keeping its commitment to entertain with such activiities.
As for the hip-hop crowd on the floor…they couldn’t have asked for more. Some find in the activity an exercise that keeps them perked up all day, while others look at it as an opportunity to hone dancing skill and enhance the prospects of a dream career. But all of them are partaking of the dollops of fun.
“I can’t keep my feet from tapping when I hear dance music,so here I am,” gushes undergraduate Taran Singh. His dance partner Devashree Sinha just passed class XII and between school and college this a welcome break, but Sneha Dixit and Pavitra just might make a career out of it. “The majority of teenagers in the batch has deterred the older dance enthusiasts at bay,but they can join any time” says Kuljit Singh, who runs a dance training institute and manages parties and cultural events.
“Salsa has assumed different forms across the world,” says Kuljit, who trains his lot in the Indianised version to the tune of even Hindi film songs. “It’s mostly numbers of Enrique,Jennifer Lopez,Ricky Martin and George Michael that are well suited to the movements comprising bends and twists and sudden leaps amidst interwining of the partners’ bodies. Indian entertainment industry has taken to the dance form and adapted to its rhythm to a beautiful effect.”
Till the blockbusters make a comeback, the entertainment hub is not bereft of song and dance.
