Top seeds Saina Nehwal and Chetan Anand emerged winners in their respective matches to reach the pre-quarter-finals of the Syed Modi International Grand Prix Badminton Tournament at UP Badminton Academy,here.
While the Saina vs Juhi match was a one-sided battle,Chetan had to face some challenge from opponent Srujan Nandaluri. Saina quelled aside the challenge of qualifier Juhi Dewangan 21-5,21-2 in a matter of just 14 minutes. Chetan took 29 minutes to prevail over Srujan Nandaluri 21-19,21-12.
Now Saina will play against Chitralekha while Chetan will face Adnan Fauzi of Indonesia in their respective pre-quarterfinal clashes on Thursday.
In the women’s singles section,PV Sindhu caused a slight flutter when she defeated eight seed Sayali Gokhale 21-17,21-10. Other seeded players in the women’s section sailed into the pre-quarters. India’s Aditi Mutatkar of the fourth seed outclassed countrymate Saili Rane 21-8,21-7 while Trupti Murugunde (seventh seed) beat UP girl Sara Naqvi 21-9,21-15. In some other important matches,Maria Febe Kusumastuti (seed 2) of Indonesia beat Anjali Kalitha of India 21-12,21-10,third seed Maja Tyrdy of Slovenia defeated Indian shuttler Sampada Sahasrabhudhe 21-15,22-24,21-16,Fransiska Ratnasari (seed 5) of India beat Anita Ohlam of India 20-22,21-13,21-9 while Switzerland’s Jeanine Cicognini (seed 6) beat Gayatri Vartak 22-20,17-21,21-11. All the seeded players in the men’s section won their respective opening day matches. Third seeded Andre Kurniawan Tedjono of Indonesia beat India’s B Sumeeth Reddy 21-13,21-10,fourth seed Parupalli Kashyap beat Ravinder Singh 21-8,21-13,fifth seed Dyonisius Hayom Rumbaka beat K Anil Kumar 21-8,21-9,sixth seed Anup Shridhar outclassed Arun Nandaluri 21-7,21-15 while eighth seed RMV Grusaidatt triumphed over Mohit Kamat 21-11,21-16. Men’s doubles and mixed doubles matches were also organised on Wednesday.
