Plea for FIR: Maya gets 3 more weeks to respond

The CBI, replying to the notice, has said there was no material available with the agency to warrant registration of a fresh FIR.

The Supreme Court Tuesday gave three more weeks to former Uttar Pradesh chief minister and BSP chief Mayawati to respond to a petition, asking the CBI to lodge a fresh FIR in a corruption case against her.

The court had issued notices to her, the CBI and others on a petition filed by Uttar Pradesh resident Kamlesh Verma, seeking registration of a case against Mayawati.

Earlier, the apex court had clarified that it had neither directed the CBI to lodge an FIR against her nor stopped it and that the agency could proceed on the basis of the materials it possessed. The CBI, replying to the notice, has said there was no material available with the agency to warrant registration of a fresh FIR. It added that whatever material was collected and statements were recorded had already been held to be bad by the court in a previous order.
