The national president of BJP,Nitin Gadkari,on Wednesday asked the partys Uttar Pradesh unit to gear up for the 2012 Assembly elections and hold programmes to bring to light the state governments failure.
Gadkari, who met leaders at a day-long meeting in Delhi, asked them to forget individual differences and work to strengthen the party. He reviewed the progress of the Gaon Chalo campaign and asked the state unit to initiate programmes on law and order, welfare of Dalits, women and poor, implementation of government schemes.
Sources said Gadkari expressed his unhappiness over the fact that despite being halfway, the Gaon Chalo campaign has not reached even half of the villages. A leader present at the meeting said: Since UP coordinators Karuna Shukla and Narendra Singh Tomar were touring the state for the campaign,Gadkari has been receiving direct feedback. Only 10 days are left before the campaign ends, but leaders are yet to cover even half of the villages. He has also asked them to extend the campaign if required.
Moreover,Gadkari asked the party to complete the formation of different cells by January-end. Senior leaders like state president Surya Pratap Shahi, national vice-presidents Kalraj Mishra and Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi and Lucknow MP Lalji Tandon attended the meet.
Speaking to The Indian Express over telephone from Delhi,Shahi said: This was the first meeting where we discussed the partys plans and strategies for 2012 elections. We will contest all seats and ensure that we gain from the unrest prevailing against the BSP government. A meeting of the district and regional office-bearers will be held in Lucknow on January 16 to discuss plans for the next six months,he added.
