Maya shakes party reins

In an apparent bid to gear up for the 2012 assembly elections,Chief Minister Mayawati has dissolved her party’s district and Lok Sabha constituency committees.

In an apparent bid to gear up for the 2012 assembly elections,Chief Minister Mayawati has dissolved her party’s district and Lok Sabha constituency committees. She has also dissolved the Bhaichara committees in districts.

The party’s ongoing statewide agitation “Janhit Andolan” against the Centre have been postponed till September 1.

Every Wednesday,Demonstrations had been on in one assembly constituency of each division to expose the alleged step-motherly treatment meted out by the Centre.

Mayawati has directed party functionaries to complete the organisational work — including formation of the new committees at district level —by August 20. After September 1,the party will resume the “Janhit Andolan”.

On Thursday, the chief minister held a meeting with her party functionaries.

Party sources said she would appoint an in-charge for every assembly constituency soon. “Those made in-charge are considered the party’s candidate in those constituencies,” a leader said.

The CM has asked party functionaries to work to avoid a situation in which there is an “anti-government” wave in the state. “She does not want the Congress to take political benefit of the possible anti-incumbency factor,” the leader said. “So she directed us to remain in touch with cadres at grassroots level.”

She also hinted about giving a fresh task to party general secretary Satish Chandra Mishra —expanding the BSP base among Brahmins.

Earlier, the CM had asked Mishra to stay off political matters and instead, concentrate on legal matters involving the party and the government.

Insiders in the BSP said the CM has also made some changes in the existing jurisdiction of party’s coordinators.

“For example, she has combined Allahabad zone with Mirzapur. Earlier,Mirzapur was part of the Varanasi zone,” a leader said. Similarly, she has combined Azamgarh with Varanasi zone.
