Khalid’s family refuses compensation

The family of alleged terror operative Khalid Mujahid,who died on May 18 in police custody,on Wednesday refused to accept the financial assistance of Rs 6 lakh,offered by the state government,stating that accepting it would be an insult to the Muslim community which was helping them in fighting the court case.

On Wednesday,Minister of Horticulture and Food Processing Paras Nath Yadav visited the family in Jaunpur and offered a cheque for Rs 6 lakh. Khalid’s uncle Zaheer Alam Falahi said he refused to take the cheque. “I told the minister that we were fighting the case of Khalid in four courts — Lucknow,Faizabad,Barabanki and Lucknow High Court —and had hired around 10 lawyers. In the last five-and-a-half-years since Khalid was arrested,we have spent around seven times the money the government was offering,” said Falahai.

Paras Nath reached Khalid’s house around 3.00 pm and stayed there for around half-an-hour. The family told the minister that had the state government made the findings of inquiry report of Nimesh Commission public,Khalid would have been granted bail by the courts.

On Monday also,the minister had visited the family and assured that the inquiry ordered by the government into his death would be completed soon.
