The Kanpur police once again finds itself in an embarrassing position. Nearly 19 days after the police had rejected the claims that four-year-old Nikhil Kumar has been kidnapped,a ransom call from the abductors on Wednesday has put it in an awkward situation.

Nikhil was allegedly kidnapped from the Shiv Katra area on August 9.

After two days,Nikhil’s parents registered a complaint with the police,in which they accused a constable,Hanuman Prasad, and four others of being involved in the kidnapping. Police had then rejected it to be a case of kidnapping.

On Wednesday,Nikhil’s family received a call demanding Rs 1 lakh ransom for his release.

After several rounds of negotiations,Nikhil’s father Mahesh Kumar Pasi agreed to give the kidnappers Rs 20,000 and also went to a specified place the same day with the money for securing his son’s release. The kidnappers, however, did not turn up and the family is waiting for the next call from kidnappers.

Though Mahesh could not be contacted, his wife Madhu said she has been terrified after the brutal murder of Shivam Bajpai, who was kidnapped on August 17.

“At any cost,we want our son back,” she said. “It is even more surprising that police have failed to collect information about Nikhil in the past 19 days.”

She,however, refused to comment on the ransom call made by kidnappers.

Clueless about Nikhil’s whereabouts, the police are yet to get any lead in the case.

The police have, meanwhile, arrested the constable but Prasad has denied any involvement in the kidnapping.

“We are trying to trace the kidnappers through surveillance system,” said O P Singh,ASP (Crime).

The police are looking for one Sandeep Tiwari, who has been also accused by Nikhil’s parents in the kidnapping case.

“Initial investigations reveal Tiwari’s involvement in the case and he will be soon arrested,” Singh added.

This is not for the first time that Kanpur police have landed themselves in such a position.
