The state ATS arrested two persons in Sarnath on Wednesday in connection with a hawala racket and seized Rs 16 lakh from their possession.
ADG (Law & Order) Brij Lal said the ATS team arrested Sirajuddin alias Pappu and Raees Ahmed,residents of Varanasi,while they were on their way to deliver hawala money to several families in Azamgarh district. The duo told interrogators that the money was being delivered on the instructions of Mumbai-based hawala operators. Delhi and Mumbai-based operators channelise hawala money through their agents in various parts of Uttar Pradesh,including Allahabad,Jaunpur,Azamgarh,Mau,Gorakhpur,Sidhhartha Nagar and Maharajganj,they told police. Rajiv Sabharwal,DIG of UP ATS,said they are verifying the list of persons to whom the money was being delivered. The police team had gone to these places,but the concerned persons had already escaped,he added.

Labourer poisons children,kills self
A labourer committed suicide after administering poison to his three children in Lisarigate area of Meerut district on Wednesday. According to DGP Headquarters,the man took the extreme step as he was unable to pay his dues. Meerut SP (City) Prabal Pratap Singh said Sagir (35) was under depression since his wife died five months ago. He was finding it tough to look after his children — Sajid (10),Shazia (8) and Rashid (6).
