Eastern Railway forward M Riyazuddin sounded the boards twice— as his team Eastern Railway,Kolkata registered a thrilling 2-1 win against South Western Railway,Hubli in their pool stage match of the 67th All India Railway Hockey Championship at Dhyanchand astro-turf stadium,Lucknow on Thursday.

Dribbling past defenders intelligently,SWR player Ali Hasan broke the ice in the 17th minute of the play. However,M Riyazuddin struck the equaliser in the 24th minute. No more goals could be scored in the first-half,due to a strong defence exhibited by both the teams. Riyazuddin made full use of a penalty corner awarded to ER Kolkata in the 55th minute to make the score 2-1 in favour of Eastern Railway which was maintained till the final moments of the play.

In another pool match which proved to be an interesting affair,ICF Chennai beat hosts NER Gorakhpur 4-2. On behalf of ICF Chennai,Sarath Babu found the target twice (21st and 61st minute) while Shayam (4th minute) and Ramesh Babu (28th minute) netted apiece each. Mohsin Ali (2nd minute) and Yogendra Bhardwaj (34th minute) were the goal-scorers for NER.

Three more pool stage matches were played on Thursday. All three proved to be one-sided battles.

Pawan Changappa blasted five goals which included a hat-trick as SCR Secunderabad beat RDSO Lucknow 12-0. Mayur Subbaiah,Prabhakar Singh and Ashish Minz (2 goals each) and Abdul Aleem (1 goal) were the other goal-scorers for SCR.

Leonard Bilung scored as many as eight goals and Juran SH Purty netted three goals to pave the way for a 15-0 win for SER Kolkata in their match against ECR Hajipur. Arun Kumar struck two goals while Bipin Ekka and John Minz netted apiece each.

Northern Railway,New Delhi forward Prem Kumar played aggressively and scored eight goals which included a hat-trick to fashion a comprehensive 16-0 win for NR against CLW Kolkata. Gaurav netted three goals,Ravi Bharti struck twice while Harjit Singh,Rupinder Singh and Vivek scored one goal each.
