Crime & Primetime

Anup Soni on what makes Crime Patrol a family favourite.

Public fascination for drama and news reports based on crime remains a mystery, but actor Anup Soni, who anchors Crime Patrol on Sony TV,feels viewers connect with the incidents at a personal level.

“In our show, there are stories of victims as well as perpetrators of crime who are like people you know and meet everyday and such things keep happening around us all the time,” says Soni, adding,”Our objective is to sensitise people as well as to instil awareness in them against the tendency to break the law. This is probably what makes it popular among all age groups for family viewing.

From the episodes aired,he cites examples such as of the story in which a woman ends her life to get out of the way of her husband who is committed to somebody else or the dentist who commits suicide when harassment for dowry by her in-laws becomes unbearable. “As an anchor,my comment at the end of every story is in the form of an advice to the victims to speak up and to the criminals to beware. If we share our travails with close ones, chances are there would be no offence. On the other hand,if innocent people resort to criminal ways to evade a crisis, they must know that the most sophisticated of plans get foiled and there is no escaping law. It is this positive vibe that hooks people to the show,” he opines.

On how he manages to do justice to this job and his role in the family drama Balika Vadhu,Soni confesses he is a writer’s actor. “I don’t improvise and try as much as I can only to deliver the goods. I am fortunate to get the best of scripts and that helps me come across as a good performer,” he says.
