They’ve cut an album but the songs are not all over the TV channels.

“We play at cafetarias, malls and bookstores and are happy to see the crowd sway to the rhythm,” says Vasu Dixit, lead singer and guitarist of Bangalore-origin band Swarathma,in town to perform to a live audience at the book store Landmark on Sunday.

The band that specialises in fusion music combining Carnatic with rock and jazz, comprises six members.

“We are all individualistic, but blend thick to make music,” beams Pavan Kumar, who provides percussions and back vocals. A crowd that was more curious than eager waited for over a couple hours as the band went on and on with their sound check and even asked for a 15-minute break “to dress up”,but proved it worthwhile as they performed from the six songs of their album.

Their songs are all in Hindi but it was their number ‘Ee Bhoomi’ (The Earth) in Kannada that won them the ‘Bangalore’s Best Band’ prize in a contest held by an FM radio channel. The Sunday crowd waited patiently, gave an attentive listening and finally rewarded their performance with an encouraging applause, for the simple, winsome rhythm and melody of their songs.
