AMU student booked for ‘objectionable remarks on Prophet’

According to police, the complainant alleged that on Tuesday afternoon, he was sitting with his friends in his hostel room when the accused visited them and made objectionable comments against Islam and derogatory remarks against the Prophet.

A Class XII student of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU)-run intermediate college, who was suspended for allegedly making objectionable remarks against the Prophet during a discussion with fellow inmates at his hostel on the university campus on Monday, has been booked in this connection on the complaint lodged by his classmate, local police said Wednesday.

Both the accused and the complainant are Muslims, police said.

According to police, the complainant alleged that on Tuesday afternoon, he was sitting with his friends in his hostel room when the accused visited them and made objectionable comments against Islam and derogatory remarks against the Prophet. “When we objected, we were abused and threatened with dire consequences,” the complainant alleged.

Based on the complaint, an FIR under sections 295-A (deliberate and malicious acts, intended to outrage religious feelings of any class by insulting its religion or religious beliefs), 506 (criminal intimidation) and 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) was registered against the accused student, police said.

“I received the complaint through AMU authority and an FIR was registered. We are yet to record the statement of the complainant,” said the area police station in charge.

Deputy Superintendent of Police, Aligarh City, Suman Kannojia said, “We are investigating the charges based on which further action will be taken.”

According to AMU sources, the students were discussing the war between Israel and Palestine Monday evening when the course of their discussion turned towards Islam and the Prophet and the student allegedly made some objectionable remarks.

AMU Deputy Proctor S Ali Nawaz Zaidi had Tuesday said, “The student was suspended with immediate effect and an inquiry has been ordered into his objectionable posts. Till the completion of the probe, he will remain suspended. “Hostel inmates thrashed the student after locking him in a room and forced him to delete the post,” Zaidi had added.
