AROUND 82 children fell ill due to suspected food poisoning after consuming mid-day meal at a government primary school in Chinhat area on Wednesday, Lucknow’s Chief Medical Officer Dr S N S Yadav said.
Students complained of stomach ache and started vomiting after consuming the meal of kadhi-chawal at Juggaur primary school, officials said.
Locals and parents rushed the children to Dr Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital, where they were said to be out of danger. Till evening, only nine were still admitted in the hospital while two were at Juggaur Primary Health Centre, the CMO said.
Eight ambulances were rushed to the spot while administrative and police officials ensured the necessary arrangements of treatment of children, District Magistrate of Lucknow, Raj Shekhar, said.
“It is a matter of serious concern as this is second case in recent days. We are ensuring the best possible treatment of the children and will make sure that inquiry is done properly and action is taken accordingly in this casey,” said the DM, who visited the hospital along with state Health minister Ahmad Hasan to take stock of the situation.
The food safety department has been directed to collect samples from the school campus and from Akshay Patra, the NGO involved in supply of mid-day meal, for lab testing, Raj Shekhar added.
Earlier on July 29 over 50 students of a government primary school at Arya Nagar locality fell ill after consuming milk provided under mid-day meal scheme, prompting the district administration to order an inquiry into the matter.
The DM said the district administration will now conduct random and surprise checking of the food at the preparation, dispatch and distribution points of midday meals.
