THE MEERUT police on Sunday arrested three persons for allegedly beating up three sadhus belonging to the Nath Sampradaya (Nath sect), suspecting that they were members of a gang of child-lifters. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, the mahant of the Gorakhnath temple, is a member of the same sect. Yogi Gorakhnath is considered to be the originator of this sect of sadhus, who worship Lord Shiva.
The three sadhus were allegedly cornered by some residents of the Prahlad Nagar locality in Meerut on Friday evening and were beaten up with clubs even as the victims claimed that they were heading to Haridwar in Uttarakhand, sources said.
A passerby filmed a video of the alleged assault that soon surfaced on social media.
The victims were later handed over to the personnel at the Lisadi Gate police station where they told the police that they belong to Haryana and made a brief halt in Meerut on the way to Haridwar.
Senior Superintendent of Police, Meerut, Vipin Tada, took cognizance of the video and directed the Lisadi Gate police to take action on Sunday.b“Three persons – Puneet, Himanshu and Aman – have been arrested while a search is on for others involved in the incident. The sadhus have been allowed to leave. An
inquiry has been set up in this connection under the Deputy Superintendent of Police, Kotwali, Ashutosh Kumar,” said the SSP.
Further probe is on, a senior officer said.
