Controversies related to electoral rolls does not seem to end in Pune city as now the civic election department has revealed that it has found fake Aadhar card, election cards and electricity bills submitted as proof of identity and address to confirm the voters identity in the electoral rolls.

As part of the election process, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) had got the electoral roll from the district election office and began the exercise of preparing ward wise electoral rolls. Municipal Commissioner Naval Kishore Ram had stated that there are double entries of three lakh voters in the electoral roll procured by the civic body. There are a total of 35,51,469 registered voters in the civic body till July 1.

After the draft electoral roll was published as per the wards, it was found that many voters from outside limits of Pune civic body featured in the electoral rolls, and also many voters residing in Pune had been shifted to the electoral roll of other wards.

Thus, the state election commission directed the PMC election office to extend the deadline for seeking public objections on it and make possible changes in the electoral rolls as per the need. A total of 22,809 objections were received till the deadline of December 3.

“The verification of suggestions and objections on the electoral roll has been started at the level of ward office. The verification of the applicant’s residential proof based on the document submitted with the application has to be done before visiting the given address to make a decision on the application,” said Omprakash Divate, additional municipal commissioner of PMC.

He said, “We have noticed that few applicants have submitted fake documents of address proof. They have created fake documents using technological tools so that they resemble the true documents provided by the government.”

Divate said that the PMC has found that more than one Aadhar card has been prepared using the same enrollment number. “Election cards have been found which do not resemble the name with the voter number that is available on the online electoral roll of the Election Commission of India,” he said.

Diwate said that the customer numbers are different in the same electricity bill, and when checked, the customer number does not exist.

There are 41 electoral wards in PMC from which 165 corporators will be elected. There will be four corporators to be elected from 40 wards and five from one ward.
