The CPI’s tirade against the Left Front government in Bengal continued with party MP Gurudas Dasgupta saying the continuous violence that has rocked several districts following the Lok Sabha polls, including Lalgarh, cannot be stopped by imposing bans. Last week, the CPM-led LF government had agreed to implement the Centre’s ban on the CPI-Maoist party.

“Peace will return to the state only if all sections of society, including the tribals, are provided with socio-economic development, which the government has failed to do,” Dasgupta said while speaking about the decisions taken at the state committee meeting of the CPI’s trade wing All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC),held from June 20-22.

“The views and warnings of other LF constituents were not heeded to by the CPM. Of course,we are also part of the LF and will continue to be so,but the ongoing crises have resulted from not taking all LF constituents into confidence,” senior party leaders said.

The AITUC meet also slammed the Centre for its “anti-working class” stance, saying many companies had shut down and people were thrown out of jobs in the name of economic recession. “The rate of lay-offs,lock-outs and suspension of payment of salaries is alarming. This is an attempt to reduce the numbers of industrial workers,” he said.

The meet resolved that in the case of shutdown factories that cannot be restarted, new factories should be established on the land on which the old factories are now standing. Cottage industries and small enterprises should receive government help and encouragement and various industries should be modernised.
