Unless youre a hardcore music buff, chances are youve never heard of Pune group Vayu. The band, which has rocked many a gig from Mumbai to Hyderabad to Bangalore since it was formed in 1997,is now ready to make its presence felt across India with its new album Wings of a Dream.
The bands current line-up includes Ravi Iyer on the vocals and guitar, vocalist and bassist Crosby Fernandes and drummer Gopaal Dutta. The album was mastered in Melbournes Edensound Mastering, the same studio which also worked on the albums of Deep Purple and, according to Tirthankar Poddar, aka 2Blue,ex-frontman of the Vayu, that was the parameter they went blindly with. The album promises to have a lot of loud crunchy rock. Weve gone for a classic rock sound, but there are also some soft intimate ballads like the title song Wings of a Dream.
The album has been in the making for two years, says Poddar. The big labels said we were not mainstream enough for them, the independent labels said we were too mainstream for them. So,we were caught in a limbo, which is when we decided that we should just release it ourselves. In fact,Ravi Iyer paid for it out of his own pocket. But if you like the music, youd have to wait to catch the band live a promotional tour isnt likely to happen anytime soon. The music, the band hopes, will speak for itself.
