While the Kolkata Police bask in the glory of cracking the Park Street rape case, the policemen at the Park Street Police Station, who have been accused of passing “inappropriate” remarks at the victim when she had gone to lodge the complaint on February 9,may face action now.
A high-level Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Supratim Sarkar, who probed the matter on orders by the Commissioner of Kolkata Police, has submitted its report on Monday.
“I have submitted the report to the CP (Commissioner of Police) today, and now it is up to him to decide what is to be done next,” said Supritam Sarkar, refusing to elaborate.
Sources close to the victim said while she was satisfied with the offenders being caught and punished, she did not want to pursue any more complaints against the policemen, neither did she intend to take back the one which she had filed. “She has had a long and painful fight all these days and is exhausted. She will go to the cops now only when she is asked to,” said a close relative of the 37-year-old Anglo Indian victim.
Officials believe the media spotlight on the CM and Commissioner of Police in the case will have an impact on the verdict in the case. “In this case, even if I am not sure whether these two officials are guilty or not,the hype will keep the scale slightly tilted towards the complainant,” said an official of the Park Street Police Station.
It was alleged that when the victim and her aunt came to the Park Street Police Station, while one official was taking the complaint of the victim, another cop had said,”—– (nightclub) jaiye Singh ji. Aap to yeh sab jagah jaate nahin hai, isliye aapki koi girlfriend nahin hai,” (Go to the nightclub,Mr Singh. You do not go to these places, which is why you do not have a girlfriend).
The cop had also been alleged of asking the victim to accompany one of his colleagues to the nightclub,
While the rape case has been solved with the identification of the culprits and arrest of some of them, the cops alleged to have misbehaved with the victim are yet to be brought to the book. Even the delay in getting the tests done on the victim, was a serious lapse that might affect the trial of the case.
