As a high-level inquiry over the delay in delivery of Union home ministers letter to Bengal chief minister revealed that the letter landed at the GPO through ordinary post, the Trinamool Congress blamed the person in Chidambarams office who decided to post such a letter through common postal mechanism. The letter, dated December 21,had landed on Bhattacharjees table on December 24. The inquiry carried by Anil Kumar, director GPO,Kolkata found nothing wrong in the delay. Since Saturday Christmas and Sunday were holidays, ordinary letters could not be delivered,he said. On Monday, immediately after the post office opened,a postman delivered it at the CMs office.
The letter came the way ordinary people send letters, Kumar told The Indian Express. It arrived at the GPO on December 24 in an ordinary bag. We deliver 50-60 such letters every day to the CMs office. I do not see any fault on the part of our staff.
The snail mail has set tongues wagging in political circles, with most questioning the seriousness of the Union government about Trinamool chief Mamata Banerjees allegations.
Claiming that the Left Front government is using the joint forces for political benefit,Banerjee has been clamouring for their withdrawal from Jungalmahal. The chief minister has already said that the Union home minister wrote the letter to appease Trinamool,an UPA ally.
Senior officials in CMs secretariat said when top dignitaries from Delhi send messages to the chief minister, they usually use fax or email. The use of special messenger is rare.
When someone from Delhi wants to send a fax to CMs office,a call is first made to check receivers authenticity, especially when the matter is secret and highly sensitive, said a senior official.
Sudip Bandopadhaya,Trinamool chief whip in Lok Sabha did not blame Chidambaram for this faux pas.
He (Chidambaram) is an articulate man,he knows how to work properly, said Bandopadhaya. I am sure he did not decide that the letter would be sent through ordinary post. The man in despatch section should be blamed for this.
Kumar said five postmen of the GPO deliver at least 300 letters to Writers Buildings including the CMs office.
Asked by Sarit Kumar Chakraborty,Post Master General (West Bengal Circle) to submit a report on the delay in delivery of the letter,Kumar said the report is ready and I will submit it very soon.
