The team of Kolkata Police on Monday returned to the city with Rajesh Saikia, the prime accused in the theft of eight Common marmosets from the Alipore Zoo who had run away from their custody while being brought here by Ahmedabad Express from Chhattisgarh on transit remand.

According to police,he was re-arrested from Durg with the active help of locals and the Chhattisgarh police. Rajesh ran away while the train stopped at Jharsuguda station in Orissa early on Monday morning. According to police,Rajesh boarded a truck from Jharsuguda and headed towards Durg. He reached Kudeswar where he lives and tried to change his look by having a hair cut.

“He managed everything by convincing people as he did not have money. He tried to contact his family from a local booth. He met one of his friends and got his wife’s ATM card. While he was trying to get money from an ATM counter,a kilometer from his home,he was apprehended by locals and the local police. After our team reached the spot,he was handed over to our team,” said a DD official.

City Police Commissioner Gautam Mohan Chakrabarty said,“The team responsible for escape of Rajesh from its custody will face strongest action for its serious lapses. The team that was sent to Chhattisgarh after Rajesh escaped will submit a report on how he managed to run away. We will take action against the officers after getting the report. But if we decide to dismiss any officer,we will start departmental proceedings soon.”
