A new 3D animation series,Bo Mamo,is about more than just the eponymous main character searching for his lost parents. The adventures of Bo Mamo a podgy,floppy-eared baby mammoth and his band of rag-tag friends are the brainchild of Mumbai-based animation company Alvina Films. The series has taken more than three years to develop, with a whopping budget of Rs 100 crore. But what make it special is that this ambitious project has been conceptualised, created and produced entirely by an Indian team, for an Indian audience.
We wanted this to be an all-Indian project from pre to post-production, explains Avishek Sarkar, one of the series writers. With this aim,Alvina Films even turned down opportunities to work with American networks like Showtime. The idea is to make a home for Indian artists, where we can continue to make quality animation, adds Sarkar.
Each episode required Rs 45 lakh in investment for storyboards and layouts on a film-sized scale. The most challenging aspect so far has been developing the massive storyline of 250 episodes, says the shows director Shabuddin Chowdary.
In the first episode,Bo Mamos fantasy homeland Oregonia is hit by a crippling frost, sending his parents on a food-seeking mission from which they dont return. Accompanied by friends Ron and Zamm (an eagle and a squirrel respectively),Bo traverses through various lands, foils dastardly plots, encounters hundreds of characters and discovers who he really is.
Tackling contemporary issues like climate change and respect for nature,Bo Mamo will be released in Hindi,English and all regional dialects in six months. Alvina Films has not yet chosen a network, though the Cartoon Network and Star Plus are frontrunners. As the 200-person team finishes up the final touches, the bar has been set,and it is high. We wanted to make the most fantastic story with the most amazing characters possible, concludes Chowdary.
