Despite a rivetting Farhan Akhtar,despite an intense Konkona Sen Sharma,despite Bollywoods best cameo profile ever,Zoya Akhtars debut directorial venture lacks the sort of spark that made Dil Chahta Hai,a benchmark in this generations language of cinema. Comparisons here,are unfair,but inevitable nevertheless. What went wrong,you wonder. The characters are suitably grey. The plot is not all that predictable. The cast is perfect. But then,you have some insipid songs,some stretched sequences,and a very laidback narration that somehow fails to explore the emotional complications that should have been natural extensions of certain situations in the film.
Vikram Jaisingh (Farhan Akhtar) is the quintessential industry outsider. A rich Delhi businessmans son,he is out to prove the world that he is worth something. Konkona too is the archetypal struggler doing odd roles,waiting for the big break. And then following a series of events,Vikram lands the lead role in a film by a respected producer Romi Rolly (Rishi Kapoor) opposite Niki (Isha Sharvani) a yesteryear bombshells daughter. From then onwards,the film is about how Vikram negotiates the twists in the path to success and what he loses in process.
The acting in Luck By Chance is top notch though. Farhan Akhtars voice often sounds a little strained for the vein of the dialogue,but his acting is a lesson in subtlety. Konkona Sen Sharmas portrayal of angst is probably the best in this generations crop of female actors. Isha Sharvani looks hopelessly pretty and fits into her character like a T. Hrithik Roshan in his cameo is well,electric.
