Its an art form which we can claim as our own,yet its not a part of the mainstream society. Kirtan or songs that celebrate Radha and Krishnas, make for ideal Odissi recitals and thats what Debamitra Sengupta wants to emphasise. For years she has conducted research on the rhythms and talas of and in her danca drama Raas Lila, which will be staged at the Rabindra Sadan this Sunday, she has used them extensively.
The dance drama also experiments with music apart from the traditional khol the pakhawaj has also been used in it. The deep and rumbling notes of the pakhawaj are meant to represent the voice of a man, while the sweet and soft notes of the khol are intended to represent the voice of a woman.
Sengupta has been appreciated as a performer and a choreographer in the country and abroad for the past 18 years and is the founder of Kolkata Mayur Lalit dance academy where she trains her students in Odissi and contemporary styles.
Raas Lila will be performed at Rabindra Sadan on May 24,7.30 pm onwards
