Land acquisition for railway project: Tables turn on Mamata

Mamata Banerjee’s movement against land acquisition seems to have now come back to haunt the railway minister herself.

Mamata Banerjee’s movement against land acquisition seems to have now come back to haunt the railway minister herself.

At a railways programme at Machlandpur in North 24-Parganas,the minister today vent her ire over the opposition from locals who do not want to part with land for setting up of Bongaon stadium, one of Banerjee’s pet projects.

“A few comrades are trying to hinder the work of Guruchad Thakur stadium at Bongaon. We will not let a handful of people hinder development,” Banerjee said at the foundation stone-laying ceremony of the Machlandapur-Swarupnagar railway line.

Trouble in Bongaon started on Saturday when around 22 families protested against railway officials on a visit to the site where the stadium is supposed to come up. Some even heckled the officials.

“The land belongs to the railways and we are not forcibly taking away any body’s land,” Banerjee said today.

The railway minister on Monday flagged off two new trains that will run between Sealdah-Basirhat and Sealdah-Bongaon.
