Centre asked to file affidavit on Haldia Port
The revival plan of Haldia Port has come under the scanner of the Calcutta High Court. After hearing a PIL filed by the Haldia Port Save Committee,a Division Bench comprising Chief Justice S S Nijjar and Justice Biswanath Somadder on Friday directed the Centre to file an affidavit on the present condition of the port within six weeks.

The counsel for the committee,Advocate Saumen Sen,moved a plea before the court that the navigability of Hooghly river has been reduced to 5-7 meters from the required depth of 12-12.5 meters. He added that due to the reduced navigability the movement of cargo ships has been disrupted and as a result the port is loosing business gradually.

Govt to file affidavit on Swabhumi NOC
The Calcutta High Court directed the WBPCB to file an affidavit within a fortnight on the no-objection certificate (NOC) issued to the owner of Swabhumi for constructing a hotel on the E M Bypass. The Forum for Human,Legal and Ecological Rights had filed a petition in the High Court in 2008 alleging that the KMC had given its approval to Ganapati Parks Limited for constructing a hotel at Swabhumi heritage park illegally.

No bail for Cooch Behar candidate
The Calcutta High Court on Friday rejected the bail plea of Bangshi Badan Barman,who is contesting the Lok Sabha elections from Cooch Behar seat as an Independent candidate. Barman (41) is in jail in connection with various criminal cases. He has been involved with the greater Cooch Behar movement. Barman’s counsel pleaded that his client be granted bail for campaigning but the government’s counsel argued that his release on bail could lead to a law and order problem.
