Midday meal: HC seeks report
KOLKATA: The Calcutta High Court has asked the state government to submit a status report on the implementation of the midday meal scheme in Kolkata schools during its next hearing on July 30. A Division Bench comprising Chief Justice J N Patel and Justice Bhaskar Bhattacharya passed the orders on Friday seeking answers on why the scheme has not yet been implemented in city schools. The orders came in response to a PIL filed earlier this year by NGO State Education Chapter.
HC upholds life sentence of 6 convicts
KOLKATA: The High Court upheld the life sentence awarded to six persons in the 2002 Mahesh Agarwal murder case. The order were passed by a Divison Bench comprising Justices S P Talukdar and P K Dey. After being convicted by an Alipore fast track court in March 2007,the six Jishu Jain,Raja Dutta,Tapash Das,Dulal Hazra,Gautam Ghosh and Shankar Das had filed an appeal in the High Court in July 2007.
Bloc MP injured in road accident
Kolkata: Forward Bloc MP Barun Mukherjee was injured in a road accident near Tirupati and flown to New Delhi for treatment on Friday. The Rajya Sabha MP was on his way to Hyderabad to take a flight back to Kolkata,when his car met with an accident on Thursday.

Wards denied admission,parents may seek legal action against school
Kolkata: Parents of nearly a dozen students of Don Bosco School in Park Circus who have been denied re-admission in Class XI are likely to seek legal help against the school authorities. Addressing the mediapersons on Friday,a group of parents said the school authorities didnt give them a chance to present their case. The school has not given us any reason why my son Karan Doshi who studied at the school for 12 years has not been re-admitted, said Sanjiv Doshi. Doshi said that he along with other parents are seeking legal opinion and would appeal for injuction in the matter.

Hooghly riverfront gets Mamatas beauty push
Kolkata: In a significant move,the Kolkata Port Trust,Indian Railways and Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC)on Friday signed a MoU for the beautification of Hooghly riverfront in presence of Union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee and Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee. We will begin work within the limited power we have been offered by the people of Bengal,said Banerjee after the signing of the MoU. Both the banks of the Hooghly on the Howrah and Kolkata sides would be beautified with land from the Railways,KMC and the Port. Mukherjee said the picture of the city would change if the plan was executed in an organised way. The 10-km stretch of the riverfront from Cossipore to Garden Reach will be beautified.

19 die in separate road accidents
KOLKATA: At least 13 people were killed in Bankura district after a Tata Sumo,carrying a marriage party rammed into a lorry on Bankura-Durgapur State highway near Barjora late on Thursday night. Ten people,including the driver of the Sumo,Sumo were killed on the spot. Three others died later in the hospital. Local villagers began the rescue operations and extricated the bodies from the mangled car using gas cutters,police said. The truck driver fled the spot,police sources said. In a separate accident,at least six persons were killed after a truck and an autorickshaw collided on the NH-34 in Raiganj in South Dinajpur. In this case too,the victims were returning from a marriage party.

Soon,direct flight from Cooch Behar to Kolkata: Minister
Kolkata: The Cooch Behar airstrip in north Bengal is ready for operation and a flight between Kolkata and Cooch Behar will be introduced soon,state Transport minister Ranjit Kundu said in Kolkata on Friday. According to the minister,the state government would provide subsidy to the company,which will operate the air service. Kundu said this in the Assembly while participating in a discussion on budgetary grants for his department. Stating that representatives from South Dinajpur too have sought renovation of the Balurghat airstrip for running air services to Kolkata,Kundu added that it would depend on the success of the Cooch Behar flight. He also said the state government was trying to rejuvenate the Behala Flying Club here to train pilots.

Fire in textile godown
Kolkata: A major fire broke out at a textile godown at South Sinthee area in North Kolkata,gutting clothings and raw materials tonight,fire-brigade sources said. Thirteen fire tenders fought the blaze for about two hours to bring the situation under control. No casualty was reported.
