Highway robbery racket busted

The police busted a racket involved in looting trucks from the highways in Howrah,and arrested nine members of the gang on Tuesday night.

The police busted a racket involved in looting trucks from the highways in Howrah,and arrested nine members of the gang on Tuesday night.

According to a senior police officer,they were able to bust the gang after they began probe into the Monday’s night incident when the criminals forced into the Jalan industrial complex at Domjur and looted a lorry at gunpoint.

After the police arrested one of the gang members and interrogated him,they got vital information about his associates. In the several raids carried out in various parts of Howrah and North 24-Parganas,the police arrested nine members of the gang.

“We are investigating into the matter,” said H K Kusumkar,SP,Howrah. The police also seized arms and ammunition from the possession of the gang members.

Investigation revealed that the gang was operational used to loot trucks at gunpoint from these two districts and send them to either Bihar or Orissa. As per the initial investigation,there are at least seven more members of the gang who are still at large,said police.

The lorry that was stolen from the Jalan Industrial Complex has been recovered.

Three of the nine are residents of Asoknagar,while the remaining six are residents of Domjur,Uluberia and Sankrail in Howrah district. While three of them were remanded in police custody,the rest were sent in judicial custody.
