Double Take

It didn’t come as much of a surprise to Sonali Raut when fashion photographer Atul Kasbekar picked her up for a modelling campaign when she was still in college, some three years back.

It didn’t come as much of a surprise to Sonali Raut when fashion photographer Atul Kasbekar picked her up for a modelling campaign when she was still in college, some three years back. “When you have seen someone as successful as Ujjwala, you don’t really think of any other career option. I never had second thoughts about modelling. I was just happy it came to me,” says,Sonali, the 20-year-old sister of Ujjwala, one of India’s most successful supermodels.

After a series of campaigns for retail brands like Westside and Pantaloons,Raut has hit the big league this year with the Kingfisher calendar. Her shoot has won her rave reviews and, apparently,Bollywood offers. Her job,she says, has been easier, thanks to her sibling’s guidance. “Ujjwala’s nine years older than me,and all of us sisters have grown up idolising her. It’s primarily because of her that I knew several people from the modelling industry. As a kid I would often go to shoots with her while she was still in India. Even now she advises me on fitness and how to cope with the industry,” says the 5’7” model.

But there are minor hitches too. “Ujjwala and I look very different from each other. I am not very tall if you take her 5’11” stature,an. Sometimes, the comparisons get too much to handle. There are times when people seem to expect a replica,” says Sonali.

Right now though, she has no reason to complain. “I am in the midst of scheduling film meetings,,” she says.
