At a time when the state government is faced with an uphill task in breaking the Darjeeling impasse, its own officers running the affairs in the hills have added to its woes.
A group of officers from the Darjeeling police have sent a complaint to the state government against the administrator of now-defunct Darjeeling Gorkha Hill Council B L Meena, accusing the officer of drunken behaviour and harassing the families of the policemen in various ways.
The allegations are embarrassing and they have come at a time when the situation in Darjeeling is quite volatile. The Home Department is quite concerned about it. DGP Bhupinder Singh has been told to make an inquiry and find out the truth, a senior official of the Home Department said.
The DGP confirmed having received a report from some officers of the Darjeeling Police. I am looking at the report. But I cannot remember what exactly was there in it. So many things come to me… he said. On April 26,Home Secretary Ardhendu Sen is going to Darjeeling where he will hold meetings with top officials, including Meena and the matter may crop up there.
Meena,an IAS officer, was earlier Divisional Commissioner of Jalpaiguri division.
Meanwhile, ahead of the tripartite talks, the Morcha has requested top BJP leaders who are actually supporting the cause for a separate state of Gorkhaland to come to Darjeeling and join their movement. We have invited BJP leaders like its president Nitin Gadkari and Sushma Swaraj to campaign here. We are sure this will strengthen our movement, a GJM leader said.
We have received a request to send our leaders like Nitin Gadkari and Sushma Swaraj to Darjeeling but no confirmation has been given to them as yet, BJP spokesperson Rajiv Pratap Rudy said over phone.
GNLF leader hacked to death
Siliguri: A GNLF leader was killed by unidentified assailants at Chungthung Sallabari, about 30 km from Darjeeling, police said on Friday. Former GNLF president of Bijanbari-Poolbazar,Puspa Jang Thapa (58) was attacked on Thursday night while he was returning home at 86 Division after a meeting, said Inspector General of Police (North Bengal) K L Meena. As Thapa took shelter in the toilet of a house, the assailants broke the door to kill him with choppers and khukris, said police. Thapa had refused to join the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha, which replaced the GNLF as the torch-bearer of the Gorkhaland movement and often raised his voice against GJM. Though GNLF workers pointed fingers at the GJM for the murder,GJM general secretary Roshan Giri said his organisation was in no way involved in the murder. PTI
