The Calcutta University (CU) declared the final year results of its undergraduate courses on Thursday. The students registered nearly a cent percent pass percentage with BA topping the chart with 99.68 success rate followed by BSc with 99.35 per cent and B Com with 99.32 per cent in the 1+1+1 system.
The good results have brought joy as well as concern to the students as nearly 80 per cent of the successful candidates will not be able to get a berth in the post-graduate courses offered by the university.
Not more than 7,000 students of the nearly 44,000 students who have passed the examination will get admission in the CUs post-graduate courses.
The university authorities say the students who have secured more than 60 per cent marks will get admission but it will be tough for second division students to get enrolled in post-graduate courses.
Of the nearly 45,000 students who appeared in the universitys examination,4,423 candidates secured first division.
This year more students have registered a first division in Bengali (40) and chemistry (319) compared to the other subjects.
The university authorities, meanwhile, have denied that they are proposals to increase the number of seats at the post-graduate level.
The CU is not considering any proposal to increase seats at the post-graduate level. We are focusing more on developing infrastructure for the semester system. We have started semester systems in Bengali and political science and module system in other subjects. In science,we have semester system in all the subjects except statistics and microbiology, said Dhrubojyoti Chattopadhyay,Pro Vice-Chancellor (academic),CU.
