Even a decade ago they were buxom southern bombshells, wrapped tightly in synthetic sarees. Jaya Prada would strike a Tohfa pose,Sridevi (glossy lips parted) would entice you with a come-hither looks and occasionally one could spot Rambha revealing her much-celebrated thighs. And no,we arent talking about the covers glossies like Debonair or Stardust. We are talking about bombshells of a literal kind. Remember the covers of the boxes that housed your chosen fireworks? They were stuff teenage straight male (and not-so-straight female) fantasies.
Come to think of it they were perfect examples of a brilliant marketing strategy. Identify your target audience (adolescent boys) and give them what they want (noisy crackers and pictures of sexy women),and voila you have a firecracker in your hand.
But that was more than a decade ago. The average sex-starved Indian adolescent doesnt fantasize about sari-clad auntyjis anymore (even if they do,they arent very upfront about it). He (and she) has been fed on satellite television and has a more wordly taste in women (and dare we say, men). So,Britney Spears,Angelina Jolie,Hannah Montana abound,as Jaya Prada,Sridevi and Rambha do a disappearing act from the covers of Sivakasi produces.
A walk around the Bazi Bazar in Maidan surely proves as much. Britney Spears graces the cover of a green-colour rocket. Hannah Montanas face is prominently featured in a the cover of a rong moshal cover while the diva in Angelina Jolie finds a suitable place in the cover of a box of chocolate bombs. But the best of the lost is reserved for Mr Bond (Daniel Craig). He finds himself on the cover of a double rocket which will show you the stars and the moon. We are sure his women will agree.
