The West Bengal Pradesh Congress Committee today announced the setting up of the United Secular Democratic Front (USDF) against the Left Front and invited Trinamool chief Mamata Banerjee to head it.
At a political convention called by the WBPCC at Mahajati Sadan, state Congress president Manas Bhuniya called for a front against the Left front ahead of the Assembly polls and launched the USDF along with political outfits such as Peoples Democratic Conference of India (PDCI) and Party for Democratic Socialism (PDS).
Bhuniya said that without a coalition,it was impossible for any party to vote the Left Front out of power. Despite Mamata welcoming an alliance with the Congress during a rally on February 20,the Trinamool has been cold regarding a joint movement.
The state Congress has over the past few months established an alliance with PDS and PDCI,both of which had been Trinamool allies. The attempts for a joint front are aimed to put pressure on Trinamool so that it agrees to a joint movement.
Bhuniya said the Left Front had the support of various political parties that were united, and the Opposition would have to bring secular and democratic forces together to put up a fight.
The Congress leader demanded the two-third and one-third seat-sharing formula with Trinamool, pointing out that it was rational, pragmatic and practical.
