A MECHANISED boat capsized in the middle of Hooghly near Chengail in Uluberia on Sunday afternoon. Three persons are reportedly missing even after hours of search operation.
The boat was coming from Budge Budge in South 24-Parganas with 38 passengers ,all workers of Ludlow Jute Mill in Chengail,who were to join their duties at the mill for the 2 pm shift.
Police said the boat capsized in the middle of the river after it lost control and hit an anchored ship from Bangladesh. After hitting the ship,the boat turned turtle and capsized immediately.
The passengers fell into the turbulent waters and sailors of the Bangladeshi vessel rescues 35 of them.
The district administration has deputed divers of the disaster management group to conduct a search operation in the river. Those missing have been identified as Sheikh Sirajul,Sheikh Salauddin and Lakshmikanta,all of Pujali.
Police van mows down boy,sparks clash in Burdwan
POLICE clashed with villagers at Amrai village in Burdwan on Sunday after a police van ran over an 11-year-old boy,who took shelter at a shed amid rainfall. Three policemen and four villagers were injured in the violence
Angry villagers pelted stones at the policemen and ransacked the vehicle leaving three policemen injured after the vehicle (WB 53/8787) bearing police sticker reportedly lost control at a blind turn and barged into a shed where Sourav Pal was standing to prevent himself from getting wet in the rain.
Sourav,son of a daily wage labourer,was on his way to a nearby playground.
After the policemen as well as the driver managed to escape,a fresh contingent of police reached the spot and lathicharged on the angry villagers. Police resorted to firing of tear gas shells and 30 rounds of rubber bullet.
Four people have sustained injuries.
Locals complained that the police helped the culprit driver to escape. Sheikh Nuruddin,a local,said the police driver was drunk.
Assistant Commissioner of Police S Sylvan Murugan,who led the contingent said the vehicle was coming from Birbhum Police Lines and its driver had gone to Amrai village to attend a function at his relatives house without necessary authorisation.
