For a long time, rundown dhabas tucked into shadowy lanes of Delhi were where friends met up over a cuppa of hot Darjeeling brew. This despite the chains of glossy coffee shops, but now, with a clutch of diners in the city rolling out high-tea menus, things look set to change. The fruity notes of a Nilgiri and the maltiness of an Assam can now be sampled at Ignis. The restaurant,in Connaught Place, plans to keep up its shutters between 3.30pm and 7pm,and has put together a tea-time basket with Irish buns, chicken batons, cheese toasties, fish fingers and mini pizzas (each priced between Rs 150 and Rs 220) to go with the hot cups. Take the corner seat near the bay window overlooking the lush Central Park, and soak in the scene as your tea is brewed.
For restaurants in malls and shopping complexes,it is important to maintain an evening menu with teas and nibbles, says Zorawar Kalra of Punjab Grill that has outlets in Ambience Mall,Gurgaon, and Select Citywalk in Saket. By the end of August,Kalra plans to roll out a high-tea menu. We will do up the terrace attached to our Saket outlet in an old-fashioned way to create a tea-time ambience, he says.
At Choko-La in Khan Market, afternoon tea comes with a selection of two scones, mini tarts, finger sandwiches and homemade jam. At the nearby Café Turtle, the tea menu is laden with scrumptious cake slices, kashmiri kahwa, organic blends and masala chai (all priced between Rs 50 and Rs 95). Evenings are busy for us. Hot teas like masala chai and lemon brews are big sellers and people mostly choose date cakes to go with it, adds Priyanka Malhotra of Full Circle and Cafe Turtle.
The Senate at The Claridges offers an eclectic spread. At Rs 650,one can treat oneself to an elaborate menu of grilled sandwiches, muffins and scones with a cup of freshly brewed tea. Pick from lemon ginger tea, mint iced tea or masala chai. For a glassful of tea lattes during a shopping spree, the Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf at Select Citywalk is the place to head to. Try a steaming cup of English breakfast tea (Rs 125 for regular) with vanilla essence, milk and foam,a Moroccan mint tea (Rs 125) with rich chocolate,or a Tropical Passion (Rs 125) with passion tea and vanilla essence. Apart from these,a lot of hot tea options with chamomile, vanilla Ceylon and southern blends are available for Rs 95. Cheers to that!
