In a country of mushrooming music outfits, Delhi-based Moonshine is riding on a trippy wave with their deep organic grooves as they release their latest, eponymous EP. Formed in the summer of 2012, the band may be young, but their emotive sound is what makes you press the “replay” button when you’re on a lookout for new favourites.
Unlike the straight-out-of-college bands, Moonshine’s adroit musicians know precisely which direction to take. The drummer, Nikhil Vasudevan, for instance, is a strong pillar in the Capital’s music circuit. Risshie Sachdeva, vocalist and guitarist of Moonshine, says, “I returned from Melbourne in 2011 and was looking out to jam with like-minded musicians. I met Bijoy (Sarkar, bassist) who was working in a music store at the time. Nikhil, Bijoy and I decided to meet for a jam, after which we had a good idea about the music for the band.”
Sachdeva and Vasudevan portion out their time between Moonshine and Syncopation, a jazz funk instrumental band. Sachdeva talks about the high that comes from playing two different genres of music at once. “Juggling between the two bands is lots of fun.
Syncopation is jazz funk while Moonshine is a rock band in the true sense. Moonshine being primarily a vocal-based band connects better with the listeners whereas Syncopation’s music is more for the intellectual breed,” says Sachdeva.
Moonshine is aiming for an August release this year for their full-length debut album. “The idea behind releasing an EP was to expose the audience to a new flavour of music and give them a heads-up on what’s to come,” says Sachdeva.
Moonshine also has Wangdi Gyalpo on guitars and keys, and three numbers on its EP have been mixed by well-known producer and recording engineer Miti Adhikari. After their recent outing at Hard Rock Cafe, the band is preparing for a multi-city tour in April.
