A traffic constable was critically injured after he was run over by a mini-truck that he had flagged down at west Delhi’s Janakpuri area on Saturday. Police said the driver allegedly attempted to crush the constable.
Police said the constable, identified as Dinesh, was rushed to the hospital where he is battling for his life. The truck driver is still at large and is yet to be identified.
According to police, the incident was reported around 1 pm when constable Dinesh flagged down the mini-truck on Pankha Road. “The driver of the vehicle had initially stopped his mini-truck and submitted his papers for checking. But when his papers were being checked, the driver revved his vehicle and tried to crush the police officer. He then abandoned the truck and fled,” said a police officer.
Police said they have impounded the truck and are trying to track the accused driver.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (West) Pushpendra Kumar said, “We have registered a case of attempt to murder under the IPC. We have traced the driver to a location in the NCR and have dispatched a team to arrest him. Dinesh’s condition is said to be serious. He has not regained consciousness. The team of traffic personnel, including Dinesh, had asked the truck driver to pull up because they usually ask heavy vehicles to stop to check documents. But this truck driver, after having initially stopped his vehicle, went ahead and mowed the traffic personnel down and fled.”
