The vice-principal and three teachers of the Delhi government school, where two students were allegedly sexually assaulted by their classmates earlier this year, have been suspended for their alleged failure to report the matter to the police.Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal ordered the suspension Tuesday.

Two boys were allegedly sexually assaulted by five-six of their classmates in separate incidents in a school in Outer Delhi in April this year during a summer camp.

The parents of one of the victims told The Indian Express that she had told the vice-principal and teachers about the alleged assault but they did not take any action.

An FIR in the matter was registered Sunday after the victim’s parents approached the police.

Kejriwal, meanwhile, directed the Directorate of Education (DoE) to prepare “high-quality material” for reference of all teachers and principals, and issue guidelines for schools to handle cases of abuse in a “supportive environment” for children.Teachers and principals are mandated to report any case of sexual abuse of children that they have been made aware of, as per the POCSO Act.Education Minister Atishi wrote to the directorate asking officers to ensure training of all principals and teachers on provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO).

Calling the failure of the principals and teacher to report the matter to the police “deeply disturbing”, she wrote: “It is especially worrying that the students had informed the teachers and the vice-principal, but they did not bring it (the incident) to the notice of the police or any higher authorities. Not only is this immoral, but also against the law. As per the POCSO Act, non-reporting of sexual abuse — by any adult who is aware of the abuse — is a criminal offence.”
