Shuttlecock consignments cleared

As if worldwide criticism and internal failures were not causing enough trouble for the Commonwealth Games Organising Committee, the Ministry of Agriculture had to do its bit by raking up bird flu fears.

Chinese shuttlecocks, which had come under the scanner during the bird flu scare five years ago, returned to create fresh trouble for the badminton event. The Animal Husbandry department of the Ministry of Agriculture had stopped the import of Games consignments, which were held up at the Delhi airport for over a week. The consignments were finally cleared on Wednesday.

“Thankfully,we are well in time now. The event starts only after October 3. Though we had already stocked up a few hundred shuttlecocks, fresh import had been stopped. The ministry demanded quarantine certificates from the manufacturers of these shuttlecocks, which were presented, and the consignments have been cleared now,” said VK Verma,Director General of the CWG Organising Committee.

Officials said it was not confirmed why India continued with its ban on the Chinese shuttlecocks in spite of it being lifted by other countries. The Badminton Association of India (BAI),however, was permitted to import the shuttlecocks for national tournaments, the official said.

Top shuttles are made with goose feathers, mostly from China and Taiwan. “We continue with the ban even though other countries have lifted it. But we are glad the consignments have been cleared,” said Verma, also the BAI chairman.
