Saving the drop

While potable water requirement of the city has crossed the 1,000-million gallon per day (MGD) mark,the installed capacity of the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) remains at 810 MGD.

With the temperatures reaching 41 to 44 degrees Celsius last week,demand for water has also shot up. Newsline takes a look at the water situation in the Capital

* While potable water requirement of the city has crossed the 1,000-million gallon per day (MGD) mark,the installed capacity of the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) remains at 810 MGD.

* DJB’s ongoing drive to penalise wastage in the time of shortage has already earned the agency more than Rs 17 lakh in revenue

* 1,450 consumers were issued challans by the DJB for wasting water since January this year

* At least 1,300 were booked for using illegal and unauthorised water connections

* At least 150 consumers were issued challans for wasting water through overflowing overhead tanks in upscale South Delhi localities

* 20 consumers were booked in Old Rajendra Nagar last week for the same offence

* At least 70 consumers were booked in Sarita Vihar

* 25 were booked for the same offence in Vasant Kunj last month

* The defaulter has to appear before the DJB-appointed special magistrate within 15 to 20 days from the date of the challan being issued.

* Depending on the nature of the offence,the court may levy a fine amount ranging from Rs 500 to 5,000

* If the offence is repeated,the court may impose a daily fine,which may vary between Rs 50 and Rs 200,till the time the offender stops flouting norms.
