Traffic on the Gurgaon-Delhi Expressway came to a standstill by Anna Hazares supporters, who carried out a bike rally headed towards the Ramlila Maidan Thursday. The supporters, who claimed to have been lathi charged by police personnel in the area, reportedly also forced shopping malls on the Gurgaon-Delhi Expressway to close.
More than 700 bikers took to the streets and started their protest rally from Rajiv Chowk. Waving the national flag, their rally culminated at the Maidan later in the evening.
Amidst allegations of lathi charge by the area police,Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) Chayya Sharma said,There was no lathi charge. A motorcade of supporters arrived and tried blocking traffic. We warned them that they would be detained if they continued doing so. When they didnt agree, they were detained at the Vasant Kunj South police station and released shortly after.
Traffic was thrown out of gear at the toll as long queues of cars upto 2 kms were seen on both sides of the toll. Amidst the chaos, many of the protesters also left their bikes on the carriageway and fled leaving their bikes behind which furthered the problem.
The traffic has been affected as the Delhi police had tried to stop the Anna supporters near a petrol pump in Mahipalpur which led to some kind of trouble. A large number of supporters are also there protesting at the toll plaza. That is why the traffic has come to a standstill, said Manoj Aggarwal,CEO Operations DSC Limited.
Some Annas supporters also tried to force a couple of malls in the city falling on the Delhi-Mehrauli Road as a symbolic protest to support the movement against corruption. The malls were closed for an hour and half after which it came back to normal and not surprisingly nobody protested.
