An artwork by Annabel C Schenck.
With large-scale paintings and engravings, French artist Annabel C Schenck’s work questions the need for realism in art.
Rising above a mass of chaotic waves, under an equally turbulent sky, the mound-like island stands strong. To Annabel Chatterjee Schenck, a French artist who divides her time between India and her home country, the island is symbolic of a navel — an allegorical reference to a place of refuge, of a longing for her mother’s comfort in a time of emotional upheaval. Titled Maman! Mum!, the large 500 x 200 cm of drypoint on canvas is one of Schenck’s many large-scale engravings and paintings on display at Alliance Francaise Gurgaon.
Straying away, but not completely removed from reality, landscapes borne out of etchings, drypoints and oil paints comprise Schenck’s show called “Orientations.” Being “oriented”, explains the artist in her concept note, is a feeling of belonging, of knowing where one stands. “Just as we orient ourselves in a given environment, with identifiable points, the audience is invited to journey through the picture,” says the
29-year-old, an alumnus of the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs, France and Shantiniketan, Kolkata.
“Colours never meant anything to me until now,” she says, “I never felt the need for colour because we see the world in colour, and black-and-white is my way of transforming this world, to translate, to give it another reality,” says Schenck. But a recent love for oil paints have led to a discovery of colours for Schenck, validated by an untitled oil on canvas where the indistinct horizon is a blur between the white snow and the blue sky.
Schenck takes the multimedia exhibition further with her untitled etching and oil on wood work. In this diptych, a frame of a woman emerges out of the canvases and flows onto the wall. On another wall, 16 miniature draft sketches are lined up like soldiers in tiny wooden boxes. For Schenck, the medium and colour are no longer a bar, and size never was.
Orientations is on Alliance Francaise de Gurgaon, S-24/8, DLF Phase III, Gurgaon, till May 3.
