Delhis hot weather cricket season is in full swing, but 21 year-old Yogesh Nagar,is taking it easy. The Delhi Daredevils all rounder is playing just one tournament the East Delhi cricket T20 tournament. Playing for the DDCA team,Nagar justifies his choice playing under lights rather than in the forty overs a side day tournaments. I have had a hectic last season, and I thought that my body needed some rest. Since I have been playing a lot of T20s recently so I am sticking to that format. But for the moment,I am just chilling, he says.
But Nagar can afford to be relaxed, especially after a decent stint in this seasons IPL for Delhi Daredevils. Nagar along with Unmukt Chand were the only local players representing the franchise, apart from captain Virender Sehwag. While Chand struggled to perform in the T20 tournament,Nagar batting at number 6 or 7 finished with a respectable 111 runs, most significant of which was a six over long on that gave Delhi a win over the Deccan Chargers. While the six may have been the defining moment of his IPL season, what excites him is simply the fact that he got picked to play 11 matches.
In the previous seasons I only got a few chances. I had to make the most out of whatever opportunity I got. This season,I did reasonably well in the start,so I got plenty of chances. I usually always save runs with my fielding, but this season I got a chance to contribute to the team with the bat as well, Nagar says.
Yogesh thanks his skipper,Virender Sehwag for the opportunity. I didnt get much chance to speak to the foreign players, but I was constantly speaking to Virender bhai. He told me that I am talented and can go a long way. When a player of that standard backs you like that,it does wonders to your confidence, says Nagar.
For Yogesh the next challenge will be when the Ranji season starts in a couple of months. Its clear that the four-day format retains its appeal for him. T20s may be rewarding, but I only got the chance to play in the IPL because I had done well in the Ranji Trophy. While Delhi had a poor season last time around,Nagar did well scoring his maiden century and finishing with the highest average in the squad. Last season I was still finding my way in the first class season. This time around I want to cement my place in the squad.
