Most private schools opt for internal marking

CBSE Class X exams z Govt schools prefer external board

While last year most of the city schools had opted for the Board for Class X examinations despite the option of school-based Board introduced by the Central Board of Secondary Education Examinations (CBSE) ,there has been a sharp contrast in the choices of government and private schools this time. Surprisingly, where most private senior secondary schools are seen opting for the internal board this year, all the government senior secondary schools have chosen the external Board.

In both the cases the question papers are framed by the Board, with the difference being in the evaluation.

Recommending the schools to encourage students for opting for school-based evaluation,CBSE officials had initially indicated that unlike last year, more than 80 per cent of city schools will be going in for internal evaluation. However, the government schools state that despite holding orientation sessions with parents, they see the students preferring external board.

Principal of Government Model Senior Secondary School (GMSSS) Sector 16,Anujit Kaur told Newsline,“As per the CBSE’s recommendations we tried our best to convey it to the parents that opting for internal board will add to convenience of the students. They will not have to go out to examination centres and it will lighten the pressure. However, the parents still feel that the children need to take some amount of pressure by going in for external board.”

Meanwhile,Principal of GMSSS Manimajra,Kund Vala said,“I personally feel that external board examinations make the students learn to handle pressure. Already, when the first semester evaluations are made internally, students must at least get experience of external examination in second half. So that they do not find difficulties further during the Class XII examinations. This is why,in our school,we ensured that most students opt for external board this time as well.”

On the contrary, the private schools feel that internal evaluations in the final examinations match well will the concept of Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation (CCE). For Instance,KB DAV School,Sector 7 had last year opted for external board,

however,it has now chosen school-based evaluation for Class X.

Principal of the school,Madhu Bahl explained,“What is the purpose of introducing semester system under CCE if the students have to ultimately take up the examinations externally. The entire purpose of CCE will be defeated if the students get evaluated by the board.”

Further,Director of Vivek High School,Sector 38,H S Mamik said,“Our students had opted for internal board last time, since we prefer to evaluate our students on own. With that confidence,we have, this year also, gone in for internal board.”
