Monsoon to arrive early

With monsoon reaching Rajasthan on Thursday,Delhiites can find solace in the fact that very soon monsoon showers will drench their streets too. With Southwest monsoon already reaching Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand, leading to rains in those parts,India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicts the monsoonto arrive in the city anytime after June 27.

BP Yadav,Director (Forecast),IMD told Newsline,“The normal date of arrival is June 29 but considering how it has already reached Rajasthan, the monsoon has a good possibility of reaching Delhi after three days but nothing before that,” he said.

While this year, monsoon is expected to arrive earlier than the normal date, last year,Delhi had to wait for a week from the normal date for the monsoons, which finally arrived on July 5. Despite the late arrival, excess rains were recorded in Delhi.

This year the met department forecast has predicted normal rains for Northwest India which includes Delhi and below normal rains for India as a whole. According to records,in 2010,Delhi had recorded 772.3 mm rains as compared to normal rains of 645.7 mm. In 2009 however, there was deficient rains in the city.

Before monsoon showers eventually come to the city,a depression over Rajasthan may cause some pre-monsoon showers in Delhi on Friday. Rajasthan and some parts of Uttar Pradesh will however get heavy rains in the next 24 hours.
