Method in Madness

The latest Khoj residency on art and fashion departs from the conventional framework to provoke coherent conversations.

When we see contemporary designer Kallol Datta at the residency at Khoj Studios that examines crossovers between art and fashion,we’re not surprised. One is familiar with his fashion-meets-art discourse, seen over the years in galleries as well as on ramps. His Blood Song Series is a multimedia exploration of “decay and waste”. “I’ve been dabbling in inks of late and through that,I look at different stages of blood,” he says,of the visceral “clumps” and “dripping blood” created in red ink.

Kallol has been a part of Khoj’s third edition of art and fashion residency for about a month, with six other artists/designers from across the world. The residency opened its doors for viewing on Thursday. Kallol’s work emerged from a poem titled the same. “Even with garments,I wouldn’t sketch but write about it first,” he says.

Next,we find that video artiste Pallavi Paul has transformed a ground floor room into a futuristic set. The Post-Humans Were Here has objects that act as “remnants of things not from the past but future”— a latex glove,a prosthetic leg and a lit wire-satellite that moves about in the room, among others.

Many works depart from the conventional sensibilities of art and fashion. “When we ‘curate’,we don’t really know what we’re going to get, until about a week before,” says curator Simrat Dugal,“Think of it as a proposition and an idea and not necessarily a complete work. It’s like looking at an unfolding process.”

Opposite Paul’s room is Hungarian artist Reka Gottlieb’s room reminiscent of a designer’s studio, complete with a black mannequin bust laden with curtain rings, shards of latex floormat and intricate fusion of Indian and Hungarian weaves.

Bangalore-based Elena Pereira has created six gown-like garments. Her Complexity of Remedies uses skins of flowers, vegetables and spices to “create remedies that will be applied to garments which is like a second skin”. “They jump off the point,be it in their research or their work. We’re not limiting an artist’s trajectory and we hope it generates conversations,” says Dugal.

The works are on display at Khoj Studios,S-17,Khirkee Extension, till today from 11am to 7pm. Contact: 29545274
