MCD split into five: Govt panel readies proposal

A Delhi government committee on Monday worked out the broad contours of the proposal suggesting ways to split the Municipal Corporation of Delhi

A Delhi government committee on Monday worked out the broad contours of the proposal suggesting ways to split the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) for effective functioning. The committee members — Revenue minister A K Walia,PWD minister Rajkumar Chauhan and Education minister Arvinder Singh Lovely reportedly agreed on splitting the civic agency into five smaller units.

A member said that the committee has also agreed to decrease the population per municipal ward from the existing 50,000 to 40,000. “This would take the number of municipal wards in every Assembly segment up from the existing four to six. The total number of wards under the five civic units would also increase from 270 to 398,” the member said.

The delimitation of municipal wards was last done in 2006. “It was based on the Census of 2001. The committee has now decided to have a re-look at the population covered by each ward,” said an official. Sources said the committee has asked former election officer of Delhi S P Marwah to come up with a report on the possible new boundaries for each ward. Marwah is likely to present his report on March 31,sources said.
